Current PSHE syllabus:

Since 2020 it has become a compulsory subject for key stages 1-4 in both state funded and private primary and secondary schools. 

Syllabus is designed based off of the students needs and schools are advised to work around the ‘statutory guidelines from the national curriculum’

Covers very basic diet, health and physical activity needs. 

Main focus: 

  • Improve decision making regarding mental and physical health

  • Promote self control and self regulation

  • Reduce stigma around health attitudes

  • Covers areas of health and wellbeing appropriate for various ages

  • Daily exercise and nutrition importance

  • Mental and physical benefits of active lifestyles and risks of sedentary lifestyles

  • How to seek support

  • How to achieve a healthy lifestyle 

  • Healthy eating (calories and nutrient profiles)

  • Planning and prepping healthy meals

  • Characteristics of poor diet and other behaviours of unhealthy eating.

Current Government aims:
SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE STRATEGY

Involves early years, schools, further education, higher education and children's social care. 

Aims: reduce carbon footprint (net zero by 2050), promote sustainability and provide short, medium and long-term action plan goals by 2030. Want to make science based targets from 2025 based off of the 2017 baseline. All evidence and insight to be published in 2023. 

Strategy informed by: young people, sustainability and climate experts and sector representatives (Rt Hon Nadhim Zahawi MP) 

Context: committee for climate change, Dasgupta review, Green jobs, skills & careers, 25 year environment plan and net zero strategy. Also involves the following, 

  • UN’s 17 sustainable development goals 

  • Paris agreement

  • ACE (action for climate empowerment)

  • UNCRC (UN’s convention on rights of a child)

  • UK climate change act (2018)

  • The Environment act (2021)

  • National education nature park

  • Climate leaders award

  • Sustainability leadership

Syllabus includes: 

  • Learning about the environment 

  • Support for teaching 

  • Eco-clubs and co-curricular activities

  • BEIS have delivered smart meters to schools to trial

  • Access to nature

  • Literacy training to promote carbon neutrality, waste production and resource efficiency. 

Government visions: UK is the world leading education sector in sustainability and climate change by 2030.
